1st Greek Youth Diaspora Symposium: Dialogue on Culture, Education, Innovation, and Challenges

Young Greek Diaspora members from 16 countries and 4 continents gathered in Athens on November 27-28, 2024, at the “Hellenic Cosmos” Cultural Center for the first Greek Youth Diaspora Symposium. Titled “Diaspora Dialogues: Connecting Young Voices Around the World,” the event was organized by the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy.

Fostering Global Youth Dialogue

This newly launched Symposium aims to establish a lasting dialogue and cooperation platform among young Diaspora members and between them and Greece. It aspires to be a reference point for youth networking and collaboration, highlighting their pivotal role in a rapidly changing world.

A significant feature was the introduction of the Youth Diaspora Ambassadors initiative, empowering young representatives to promote Greek culture and values through specific actions.

Addressing Future Solutions

Participants engaged in discussions on topics relevant to the younger generation, such as cultural identity, arts, professional growth, and shaping an equitable society. Esteemed speakers from politics, business, diplomacy, and academia enriched the dialogue with insights and expertise.

Focused Themes for a Vibrant Agenda

The Symposium centered on four key themes:

  1. Cultural Identity and Heritage: Emphasizing roots as a source of empowerment.
  2. Education and Career: Facilitating professional opportunities.
  3. Arts and Culture: Leveraging creativity for unity.
  4. Social Cohesion: Enabling youth to tackle modern societal issues.

Commitment to Diaspora Futures

This initiative is part of Greece’s Strategic Plan for Greeks Abroad 2024-2027, unveiled at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. The Greek government reaffirms its commitment to reinforcing ties with global Greek communities, addressing contemporary challenges, and reconnecting Diaspora youth with their heritage.

Keynote Speeches

The event featured remarks from notable officials:

Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Gerapetritis, emphasized the Strategic Plan’s role in strengthening homeland-Diaspora connections, encouraging young people to harness their strengths and preserve Hellenism.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Kotsiras, highlighted the Greek Diaspora’s importance, urging participants to exchange ideas and influence policies shaping Hellenism’s future and deeper ties with Greece.

Secretary General for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy, Maira Myrogianni, stressed the significance of understanding young Diaspora members’ views and aspirations. This Symposium is a step toward recognizing the Diaspora as a vibrant part of the national identity.
