Thessaloniki, Greece – Greek police have broken up an art forgery ring believed to have profited from selling counterfeit paintings at European auction houses.
The operation, conducted by the Subdivision of Organised Crime of Northern Greece, led to the questioning of three individuals and the seizure of numerous artworks.
Authorities raided a workshop near the historic Aghia Sophia area and an adjacent apartment building, uncovering dozens of fake paintings allegedly crafted for illicit sale. Preliminary information suggests the criminal network amassed significant profits by passing off these works as genuine at high-profile auctions.
The Hellenic Police are continuing their investigation and plan to release an official statement once it is concluded.
