Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni expressed optimism about the improved relationship with the British government and the British Museum regarding the potential reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures. She highlighted a positive shift in attitude and recent cultural collaborations but emphasised that reaching an agreement will require time and continued effort.
In an interview with SKAI radio on Friday, she noted that while progress is encouraging, reaching an agreement will require time and effort.
“There is a positive climate, as confirmed by both sides,” Mendoni said. “However, as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis recently stated, such agreements take time. While this British government lacks the negativity of previous administrations, and the British Museum acknowledges the good climate, this does not mean the marbles will return to Athens immediately. There is still much work to be done.”
Mendoni emphasised the cultural and historical importance of reuniting the sculptures. "The Sculptures must be reunited in their entirety, as they are part of the monument itself. The monument requires the reunification of its decorative sculptures," she said.
The minister also highlighted a recent thaw in relations between Greece’s culture ministry and the British Museum. This has led to agreements and cultural exchanges involving the Acropolis Museum, the British Museum, and other institutions, marking a significant shift after years of stalled discussions. “By keeping relationships frozen, you never achieve anything,” Mendoni noted, lauding the renewed collaboration as a positive step forward.
Despite the progress, Mendoni underscored the complexity of the issue, pointing out that achieving reunification will demand both patience and sustained dialogue.
