Thousands gathered in Piraeus on Tuesday evening for a dazzling display that marked the official start of the city’s festive celebrations. The highlight of the evening was the lighting of a 15-metre-high natural Christmas tree, which became the centrepiece of the event.
Mayor Yannis Moralis, accompanied by his wife Valia and their children Petros and Yolanda, led the lighting ceremony in the courtyard of the Municipal Theatre. This stunning display was accompanied by the illumination of the Piraeus City Hall and a spectacular fireworks show that lit up the night sky, filling the city center with a magical holiday atmosphere.
The event, presented by Katerina Zarifi and Charis Chronopoulos, also featured a concert by popular singer Katerina Lioliou. The singer energised the crowd, who sang and danced along to her hits, creating an unforgettable Christmas celebration. The festive music continued with performances by the Philharmonic Wind Orchestra of the Municipality of Piraeus and the Choir of the Schools of the Holy Metropolis of Piraeus. A local dance school also added a special touch with a lively dance performance.
At the heart of the celebrations stood the majestic Christmas tree, adorned with over 100,000 lights. The tree, which came from Taxiarchis in Halkidiki—known as the “capital” of fir trees—served as a beautiful symbol of the season in Piraeus, adding to the city’s festive charm.
Mayor Moralis addressed the crowd, welcoming the thousands of citizens who turned out for the event. He expressed gratitude to the people of Piraeus and visitors alike, noting the importance of togetherness during the holidays. “Christmas is a celebration of love, hope, and optimism,” Moralis said, encouraging everyone to remain positive despite the challenges of daily life. “Our Piraeus is progressing, it is bright, and it is sending a message of joy and optimism to the world.”
Deputy Mayor Adriana Zarakeli also spoke at the event, highlighting the city’s extensive holiday programming. “A beautiful Christmas journey has officially started in Piraeus, with vibrant colors and music throughout the city,” she said. She invited citizens to explore the full festive lineup available on the city’s official website. Zarakeli thanked local businesses and institutions for their support and wished everyone a Merry Christmas filled with health, love, and happiness.
