Greece has praised the fall of the Assad regime in Syria, expressing hope that it will pave the way for the safe return of the millions of Syrian refugees.
A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the need for a swift transition to a democratic, representative government and the protection of religious minorities and cultural landmarks.
The full statement reads:
“Greece welcomes the downfall of the authoritarian Assad regime in Syria. However, peace must be quickly restored, and an orderly transition to a democratically legitimized government should take place in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254. Greece remains committed to Syria’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.
Special attention must be given to the protection of non-combatants, including religious minorities, as well as religious monuments and Syria’s rich cultural heritage. A return to democratic normalcy is crucial to ending migration flows from Syria and enabling the safe return of refugees. As a member of the United Nations Security Council and with strong ties to the Arab world, Greece will contribute to the rapid restoration of peace and prosperity in Syria.”
