A 50-year-old woman from Rethymno, Agathi Markopoulou, remains trapped in Turkey under accusations of mobile phone theft, as legal complications continue to mount. The case has gained significant attention due to the prolonged detainment and reported mistreatment by Turkish authorities.

Initially accused of taking a phone inadvertently during a shopping trip near Hagia Sophia, Markopoulou and her daughter were arrested and held in poor conditions overnight.

Complications arose when a passport, sent by her son to aid her return, was mistakenly sent to Germany, further delaying legal proceedings.

Despite the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs' involvement, the case has experienced multiple delays, with a trial now scheduled for December 26. Markopoulou has reported signing documents she did not understand and experiencing inhumane treatment, raising concerns over violations of human rights.

The situation has sparked significant outrage within the Rethymno and broader Greek communities, prompting calls for decisive action from Greek authorities to ensure her safe return. As the court date approaches, her family continues to seek a swift resolution to end this ongoing ordeal.
