Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios, known as the "Special Ks," are set to reunite for the doubles competition at the Australian Open 2025. After overcoming injuries, Kyrgios will make a return to the court, while Kokkinakis aims to build on his 2024 successes, eyeing a breakthrough into the top 50 tennis rankings. Fans are eagerly anticipating the duo's comeback for an exciting display of tennis once again.
The duo, affectionately known as the "Special Ks," captured attention and thrilled audiences with their spirited playstyle during their unexpected victory at the 2022 Australian Open doubles final. They defied odds, overcoming several seasoned doubles teams and winning the hearts of fans.
Kyrgios, who progressed to the Wimbledon singles final within six months of their doubles triumph, has been largely absent from the court due to knee and wrist injuries. However, he plans to make his comeback in Brisbane this month, marking his first major appearance since reaching the US Open quarter-finals in 2022.
"We had a blast last time, and so did everyone else," Kokkinakis shared. "While doubles isn't our main focus, we feel we owe it to the fans to return and bring some fun to the game. We haven't really practiced for it; I think I've only played a handful of doubles matches since our last partnership."
Kokkinakis emphasized the excitement that Kyrgios brings to the sport, saying, "Having him back is fantastic for tennis, for fans in Australia, and globally. He has a unique energy and is an incredible player."
After teaming up with strength and conditioning coach Jona Segal in 2021, Kokkinakis has remained mostly injury-free, allowing him to pursue his career ambitions more consistently. Last season, Kokkinakis spent an unprecedented nine months overseas, securing victories at every grand slam event – an achievement he had not reached before.
In 2024, Kokkinakis claimed significant victories over top players like Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime, among others, and played a pivotal role in propelling Australia into the Davis Cup semi-finals.
Reflecting on his journey, Kokkinakis stated, "I've been ranked higher in the past, but in terms of consistent big wins and my level of play, I'm at my best. I want to use this as momentum for the year ahead."
With aspirations to break into the top 50 and beyond, Kokkinakis feels ready to challenge the best, aiming to join fellow Australian players Alex de Minaur, Popyrin, and Jordan Thompson in the top 30. Kyrgios currently holds a protected ranking of No. 21.
"Reaching the top 50 is my immediate goal, but I believe I can push further," Kokkinakis asserted.
