On December 13, 2024, another arrest related to damage to Metro facilities occurred in Thessaloniki. Two days after a 19-year-old was convicted by the Single-Member Misdemeanor Court, the same court found another 19-year-old guilty, in a summary proceeding, for painting an electrical box outside the "Agia Sophia" Metro station. He was sentenced to two years in prison, with the sentence converted to a fine of 10 euros per day. The charge was for causing damage to public property as an accomplice.
The arrest took place yesterday afternoon, after a passerby spotted him painting the word "SHARK" with a marker on the electrical box at the intersection of Egnatia and Agias Sophias streets, along with two unknown accomplices. The young man admitted to the act and apologized, stating, "I wrote it out of foolishness; I didn't realize it belonged to the Metro, as there were other writings around it. It’s the most senseless thing I've done." He claimed he found the marker on the pavement and insisted that the other two individuals were unrelated to the incident, as reported by APE-MPE.
This incident follows another case last Wednesday, where a different 19-year-old was sentenced for spray-painting walls and windows at the "Venizelou" Metro station. In his defense, he explained, "I did it for my girlfriend, to show her my love. I wanted her to see it, to impress her." The court handed him a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for three years.
