Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is currently in Brussels, participating in the European Council meeting, where he is set to address crucial regional issues, including the Middle East, Syria, and Ukraine.
During the two-day summit, which began Thursday, the ongoing war in Ukraine will be a major topic of discussion. Mitsotakis is expected to reiterate Greece’s strong stance on the need for sustained European support for Ukraine to ensure that the country does not find itself in a position of weakness when peace talks eventually begin.
As part of his presentation, Mitsotakis will also outline Athens‘ position on the Middle East, with a particular focus on Syria. Greece has consistently supported the unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty of Syria, advocating for a future that is inclusive of all religious minorities and ethnic groups. The Prime Minister will stress that the European Union cannot afford to remain passive amid the evolving situation in the region, especially as it faces growing security risks and the potential for increased refugee flows.
In addition to his remarks on Syria, Mitsotakis is expected to brief his European counterparts on his recent visit to Lebanon. As the first European leader to visit Lebanon following the ceasefire agreement with Israel on November 27, Mitsotakis will emphasise the need for the EU to support Lebanese state institutions and ensure the effective implementation of the ceasefire.
