Konstas Called Up, McSweeney Dropped

Nineteen-year-old opening batter Sam Konstas has received his first Test call-up, replacing Nathan McSweeney in Australia’s squad for the Boxing Day Test and the final match against India.

The move signals Australia’s intent to shake up their struggling top order, which has faced significant challenges against Jasprit Bumrah.

While Konstas’ inclusion is based on impressive recent form, his debut isn’t guaranteed. Josh Inglis remains in the squad and could be considered if selectors prioritize a faster scoring rate at the top of the order. All-rounder Beau Webster also retains his place. However, as a specialist opener, Konstas has a strong chance of debuting at the MCG. If selected, he would become one of Australia’s youngest-ever Test debutants.

Chief selector George Bailey acknowledged the difficult decision to drop McSweeney after just three Tests, emphasizing that it was based on the team’s need for a different approach against India. He praised McSweeney’s temperament and potential but highlighted the need to explore alternative options given the series’ progression.

Konstas’ selection comes after a prolific run of scores, including twin centuries against South Australia at the start of the season, a century against the touring Indians, and strong performances in the Sheffield Shield and Big Bash League. He also impressed against India A at the MCG in November.

McSweeney, meanwhile, has struggled against Bumrah in particular, dismissed four times for just 15 runs. While he contributed a valuable 39 in Adelaide, his overall average in the series is a modest 14.40. However, Bailey stressed that McSweeney remains a player of high potential and the decision was based on specific match-up considerations.

Alongside Konstas’ inclusion, fast bowler Jhye Richardson returns to the Test squad for the first time in three years, providing cover for the injured Josh Hazlewood. Although Scott Boland is expected to play in Melbourne, Richardson’s return adds depth to the bowling attack. He has been bowling consistently since his return from injury during the IPL.

Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, while not a selector, previously praised McSweeney’s selfless approach but acknowledged the top order’s need for more runs.

The squad changes follow recent criticism of the selection panel by former coach Darren Lehmann, who suggested Bailey was too close to the players. Cummins strongly refuted this claim, highlighting the panel’s bold decisions and objective approach.
