Michael Mosley, known from "This Morning" and for promoting the 5:2 diet, passed away under circumstances that have been described as "indeterminate" and "unascertainable" by Buckinghamshire's Senior Coroner, Crispin Butler.
On June 5, 2024, Mosley was on vacation in Symi, Greece, where he decided to walk back to his accommodation from Pedi Beach rather than take the ferry, leaving his mobile phone behind to avoid water damage.
Equipped with minimal supplies including a rucksack, water, a biscuit, a hat, and an umbrella, Mosley appeared energetic and cheerful as he embarked on his journey. However, he tragically collapsed and was found deceased near Agia Marina Beach.
The coroner's findings, detailed in an open verdict, exclude homicide, suicide, or accident-related injuries as causes of death. Instead, Butler suggests Mosley's death might be attributable to either heatstroke or an unidentified pathological condition. Toxicology reports showed nothing of note, and no definitive medical cause of death could be established, leading to speculation about a possible medical episode or an unexplained accidental incident in the context of the high temperatures at the time.
The inquest into his death concluded that while the specific cause remains uncertain, the circumstances of his demise were not related to criminal acts or self-harm. Posthumously, Mosley was celebrated by the BBC, where a tribute event encouraged adopting one health-enhancing habit in his memory.
