After the conclusion of the North-South Summit in Lapland, Finland, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized that border protection is a key element of Europe’s migration strategy.
Mitsotakis highlighted the significance of bringing together leaders from both southern and northern European countries, along with the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, to address common challenges. He pointed out that it was valuable for Greece and its partners to gain insights into Finland's experiences, particularly regarding its management of the 1,340-kilometer border with Russia. The summit also provided an opportunity for Greece and other southern European nations to discuss the security and migration challenges they face in the Eastern and Central Mediterranean.
The Prime Minister stressed that border protection is a crucial aspect of any migration strategy and a shared priority for all countries, regardless of whether their borders are land or maritime. He reiterated that improving the management of these challenges should be a collective European responsibility, a matter he raised during the European Council.
Mitsotakis also emphasized the importance of additional European funding, not only for border management but also for responding to natural disasters, which is essential for effective border security.
On defence matters, the Prime Minister noted that discussions would continue at the extraordinary European Council in February. He underscored the need to demonstrate Europe’s commitment to security, particularly to reassure transatlantic allies and partners that the region is taking its security concerns seriously.
In closing, Mitsotakis expressed his gratitude to Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo for his hospitality and praised the value of such informal meetings. He remarked, "These discussions are always very constructive, and I thank you for the opportunity to visit this beautiful part of your country and gain a deeper understanding of the security concerns faced by Nordic countries."
