The young primate, belonging to the endangered western gorilla species, was en route from Nigeria to Thailand when officials intervened.
A video shared by Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry captured the moment of rescue, showing the gorilla wearing a T-shirt as it was removed from the crate. The footage also depicted two officials tenderly feeding the animal with a bottle.
The rescued gorilla is part of the Western Plains gorilla species, listed as endangered. International trade of such species is strictly regulated and permitted only under special circumstances, such as for scientific research.
Following the rescue, the baby gorilla was transferred to the care units of Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Officials are now focused on rehabilitating the animal to ensure its safety and well-being.
“The cub is fine,” a ministry spokesperson reported. “It was recovered during customs checks while being transported illegally without proper documents. The staff of the General Directorate of Nature Protection and National Parks are providing rehabilitation and necessary care.”
The spokesperson further detailed the ongoing efforts: “Rehabilitation specialists are working diligently to help the gorilla regain its strength and health. Their care is aimed at providing a safe environment for the animal’s well-being.”
The rescue underscores the ongoing challenges posed by illegal wildlife trafficking. By saving the baby gorilla, Turkish authorities have not only prevented a violation of international regulations but also taken a significant step in protecting one of the planet’s most vulnerable species.
The rescued gorilla remains under close observation as specialists work to ensure its recovery and long-term welfare.
