A striking surge in cocaine use during the festive season has been observed in Attica, with consumption nearly doubling in the lead-up to Christmas.
This revelation comes from an analysis of wastewater conducted in the region, highlighting a significant spike in drug activity during the holidays.
According to Professor Nikos Thomaidis, an expert in Analytical Chemistry, Attica sees the consumption of approximately one kilogram of cocaine daily under normal circumstances. However, this figure escalates dramatically as the festive season approaches, reaching almost two kilograms per day.
Speaking to Greek broadcaster SKAI, Professor Thomaidis emphasised that this pattern is consistent and supported by research. “It is a given that during the holidays, there is abuse. We have proven this in various papers and publications,” he stated.
