A disturbing incident involving a police officer and citizens during Christmas festivities in Halandri Square has sparked public outrage and calls for accountability.

The Mayor of Halandri, Simos Roussos, has lodged a formal complaint, alleging that a plainclothes officer, wearing a hoodie, verbally assaulted citizens and physically attacked a volunteer dressed as Santa Claus.

According to Mayor Roussos, the altercation began when citizens pointed out the dangers of a police officer riding a motorcycle through a crowded square filled with children and parents. The officer allegedly responded with insults, threats, and physical aggression. Video evidence shows the officer making Nazi salutes and using vulgar language.

Among the victims was A. Grillakis, a civil protection volunteer dressed as Santa Claus, as well as Deputy Mayor of Civil Protection Haris Mavroudi, who attempted to intervene. The mayor described the incident as an “outrageous act of violence” and instructed the municipality’s legal team to file an official complaint. Witness statements are currently being collected at the Halandri Police Station.

Mayor Roussos criticized the lack of traffic and police enforcement in the area, emphasising that this escalation of violence occurred during a festive event attended by dozens of children.

Political Reactions

The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from political groups, including the New Left. In a statement, the party demanded the immediate suspension of the officer involved and an administrative investigation.

“Such behavior is unacceptable, especially in front of families and young children,” the statement read. The President of the New Left, Alexis Haritsis, contacted Mayor Roussos to express his support for the municipality and its volunteers.

The video of the incident has ignited public backlash, with many calling for swift action against the officer.

As the investigation unfolds, the residents of Halandri and the wider Greek community await answers and accountability for this alarming event during what should have been a joyful holiday celebration.
