ATHENS – Greek authorities are urging drivers to use snow chains after heavy snow and icy conditions caused significant traffic jams and road closures near popular mountain resorts over the Christmas holiday. Mount Parnassos, a major ski destination, was forced to close due to severe weather, and police advised motorists to avoid the area. Access roads to the top of Mount Parnitha, near Athens, were also closed due to snowfall.

A particularly severe traffic jam, stretching approximately three miles, occurred near Parnassos on Christmas Day. Officials attributed the gridlock to a combination of factors, including several electric vehicles experiencing breakdowns on the descent from the resort and numerous other vehicles becoming stuck due to a lack of snow chains or winter tires.

Traffic police have issued a strong reminder that snow chains are mandatory in areas with snow or ice and are urging drivers to heed weather forecasts before traveling. A new cold front, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and further snowfall in mountainous regions, is forecast to impact Greece starting Friday. The incident highlights the challenges posed by winter weather in mountainous areas and underscores the importance of proper vehicle preparation for drivers.
