The 19-year-old’s bold style of play left the crowd in awe. He smashed 60 runs off 65 balls in an innings that was as entertaining as it was impressive.
While Konstas displayed remarkable composure on the field, his family experienced a rollercoaster of emotions in the stands. Down from New South Wales to witness their son and brother’s Test debut, the Konstas family were on edge with every ball bowled.
Billy Konstas, Sam’s older brother, spoke to ABC Sport during the lunch break on day one, shortly after Sam’s dismissal ended what had been a thrilling knock. Reflecting on the day, Billy shared the family’s nervous anticipation.
“We didn’t have any big expectations; we were just trying to soak it all in,” Billy said. “It feels like we’re all out there with him. This week’s been hectic—Mum and Dad have been incredibly nervous and emotional.”
Sam’s debut started somewhat rocky, with the young opener playing and missing two reverse ramp shots early on. However, he quickly found his rhythm, impressing the crowd with six boundaries and two sixes, demonstrating his attacking intent.
Billy fondly recalled how Sam had always shown a natural flair for dominating the crease during their childhood backyard games. “Let’s just say I had a sore shoulder and a broken back after bowling to Sam for hours,” he joked. “I guess I’ll take some credit for where he is now.”
He also shared the significance of the moment for their Greek heritage. “Not many Greeks play cricket, but we grew up watching the Ashes and re-enacting it in our backyard. For it to come true like this is unbelievable.”
Billy also praised their father, who has supported Sam from an early age. “Dad’s been throwing balls to Sam since he was five or six. Mum’s always been there too, doing her cross, making sure he’ll be fine.”
Adding to the drama of the day, Konstas found himself involved in a brief altercation with Virat Kohli after the Indian superstar shoulder-barged him between overs. It was a rare moment of tension that suggested the Indian team had been rattled by the young Aussie’s fearless approach.
For the Konstas family, the moment was especially surreal, as Sam and his brothers had idolized Kohli growing up. “We always tried to replicate our batting after Virat. To see Sam playing against him—it’s just unbelievable,” Billy said.
Sam Konstas became Australia’s cap number 468 and is the fourth youngest Test player in Australian history, making his debut at just 19 years and 85 days old.
