In a stunning display of tennis prowess, Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios achieved a memorable doubles victory at the Brisbane International, an ATP 250 event held at Pat Rafter Arena. On December 30, the dynamic duo overcame Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies with a hard-fought scoreline of 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-8.
The match, which lasted an intense hour and 48 minutes, was filled with electrifying moments that showcased the unique skills and contrasting styles of Djokovic and Kyrgios. A key highlight occurred in the first set when Djokovic executed a spectacular around-the-net backhand winner, drawing enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.
Reflecting on the pivotal moment, Djokovic said, “That was a great setup by Mies, and I just went for it. Winning that point really gave us a boost, and the crowd’s energy drove us forward.”
Kyrgios also contributed significantly to their success, delivering stunning plays, including a perfect lob winner and a bold forehand pass. Known for his flashy style, Kyrgios delighted fans with a crowd-pleasing tweener attempt during the second set.
Returning to Brisbane after several years, Djokovic praised the Australian tennis scene, stating, “It’s fantastic to be back. The energy and atmosphere here are incredible.”
Making his comeback after an 18-month injury hiatus, Kyrgios expressed gratitude for the moment, adding, “This injury has been tough, so I don’t take any of this for granted. I’m soaking up every moment of being on the court.”
The partnership between Djokovic and Kyrgios, who previously faced each other in the 2022 Wimbledon final, adds a nostalgic and fulfilling aspect to their win. “We promised we’d team up at least once before retiring, and I’m thrilled we did it,” Kyrgios said.
With this successful doubles venture, Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, is poised to return to singles competition following a strong showing at the Shanghai Masters, while Kyrgios aims to reclaim his standing on the ATP Tour.
