Fraport Greece has announced a 6.4% year-on-year increase in passenger traffic at its 14 regional airports for the first 11 months of 2024, reaching a total of 35.22 million passengers.
The positive results reflect the continued growth of the country's aviation sector, with a notable performance in November.
In November alone, 876,317 passengers passed through Fraport-managed airports, an 11.6% rise compared to the same month in 2023. This surge in traffic is attributed to an extended tourist season and a significant increase in international arrivals, particularly from Germany, the UK, Cyprus, Italy, and Austria.
Strong Performance Across the Network
Athens topped the list for domestic traffic in November, followed by Heraklion, Thessaloniki, Chania, and Rhodes. The overall performance of Fraport’s airports remained strong across the board, with international traffic continuing to rise. Germany maintained its position as the top international market, with the UK seeing a nearly doubled traffic share compared to November 2023.
From January to November 2024, Fraport Greece airports saw 7.31 million domestic passengers (+6.4%) and 27.91 million international passengers (+6.4%), reflecting an overall increase of approximately 2 million passengers compared to the previous year. Other airports with notable growth included Thessaloniki, Rhodes, Santorini, and Corfu.
New Investment Plans to Boost Capacity
Building on these positive results, Fraport Greece is set to invest around €150 million in infrastructure improvements. The company has plans to further develop airports in Santorini, Mykonos, Kos, and Corfu, with a focus on upgrading baggage handling, check-in facilities, and passenger management systems. Additionally, a €50-60 million investment in ongoing infrastructure upgrades is expected to enhance the capacity and efficiency of the airports.
Fraport Greece’s ongoing €150 million investment program, partially funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, will include runway upgrades at several airports across the country.
Looking Ahead
Fraport Greece’s strong performance and strategic investments are expected to continue driving growth in the aviation sector. As Greece remains a popular destination for both international tourists and business travelers, the company is committed to expanding its services and ensuring a high-quality travel experience for all passengers.
Fraport Greece, a subsidiary of global airport operator Fraport AG, has been managing 14 regional airports in Greece since 2017 through a 40-year concession agreement with the Greek government.
