Tragic Loss for Greek Volleyball: Margarita Economopoulou Dies at 34

The Greek volleyball community is in mourning following the sudden death of former player Margarita Economopoulou at the age of 34.

Economopoulou, who had a successful career with several teams in Athens, tragically passed away at an airport in Thailand while returning from a holiday. The cause of death is currently unknown, and investigations are underway.

Born on April 11, 1990, Economopoulou began her volleyball journey at a young age with Hercules Kifissia, where she played as a central. She went on to have a distinguished career, playing for several prominent clubs across Greece, including ZAON, Panellinios, A.O. Pefki, Pallini, Niki Maroussi, and Pamvochaikos. She ended her active playing career in 2022.

Economopoulou was also known for her contributions off the court. She served as vice president of the OAKA Board of Directors, an organisation overseeing Greece’s largest athletic complex, adding another layer to her legacy in the sports world.

Her sudden passing has left a deep void not only in the volleyball community but also in the broader Greek sports landscape. In a statement, the Greek Volleyball Federation expressed its heartfelt condolences. President George Karampetsos and the board of directors mourned the loss, describing Economopoulou’s death as a devastating shock.

The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) also paid tribute, highlighting her dedication to the sport and her many years of service. “The HOC expresses its great sorrow for the sudden death of Margarita Economopoulou. Our thoughts are with her family, her loved ones, and the entire Greek volleyball community,” the statement read.

As friends, family, and colleagues mourn the loss of the beloved athlete, tributes continue to pour in from across the sports world. Margarita Economopoulou will be remembered not only for her athletic prowess but also for her leadership and commitment to the development of Greek sports. May her memory live on.
