Izzat Khanum Javadova, cousin of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and a DJ known as Mikaela Jav, was arrested during a drug raid in a suburb of Athens, Greece.
Greek police officially reported the arrest of 13 individuals at a party on a luxury villa in Kalivia, 20 kilometres out of Athens. AFP confirmed with a police source that Javadova was among those detained. Authorities discovered 45 packets of cocaine, ecstasy, and crystal methamphetamine, as well as a safe containing €43,000, in the bedroom of the party’s organizer.
Javadova and nine others are scheduled to appear before a judge on Thursday, January 2nd, facing charges related to drug trafficking and use. Three police officers guarding the villa are under investigation but have not yet been charged.
Javadova, the daughter of President Aliyev’s deceased uncle, Jalal, is a British citizen. Her social media presence indicates she frequently works as a DJ in Ibiza.
According to the UK’s National Crime Agency, Javadova and her husband, Suleyman Javadov, were implicated in laundering £4 million for the Azerbaijani government in 2021. This incident follows a 2018 exposé of a large-scale Azerbaijani corruption scheme within the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
