Greece officially begins its two-year term (2025-26) as a Non-Permanent Member of the UN Security Council today with a flag placement ceremony at UN headquarters.
The ceremony, scheduled for 19:00 Cyprus time (12:00 US time), will see Greek Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, join his counterparts from Denmark, Somalia, Pakistan, and Panama in raising their respective national flags alongside those of the existing members.
This marks a significant opportunity for Greece to demonstrate its diplomatic influence on global issues. As a member of the Security Council, Greece will actively participate in decision-making processes concerning international peace, development, security in unstable regions, and human rights.
In a world facing numerous challenges, conflicts, and international instability, Greece has outlined its key priorities for its Security Council tenure:
- Peaceful resolution of disputes
- Respect for International Law
- Addressing the link between climate change and security
- Promoting the “Women, Peace, and Security” agenda
- Protecting children in armed conflicts
- Enhancing maritime security
Greece’s commitment to these priorities is evident in its support for Ukraine’s defense of its sovereignty and territorial integrity and its active engagement in the Middle East to mitigate the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Greece intends to pursue these priorities through various actions and initiatives, engaging with key global actors.
