A horrifying New Year’s Day attack unfolded in New Orleans’ French Quarter when a man drove a pickup truck into a crowded Bourbon Street, killing at least 10 people and injuring over 30 others.
The incident occurred early Wednesday as revelers celebrated the start of 2025.
New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the act as "very intentional behaviour." The driver plowed through barricades before opening fire on police officers, hitting two who are now in stable condition.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell suggested the attack could be an act of terrorism, though the FBI has yet to confirm this. Authorities have not disclosed the suspect’s identity or current status.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry called the event "a horrific act of violence" and urged residents to avoid the area while offering prayers for victims and first responders.
Witnesses reported seeing a white truck speeding through Bourbon Street, crashing into pedestrians. The driver reportedly exited the vehicle and began firing a weapon, prompting police to return fire.
Nicole and Jim Mowrer, tourists from Iowa, described the chaos: "We heard crashing noises, saw a truck slam through a barricade, and then gunfire." They recounted their attempts to help victims, many of whom appeared to have been struck by the vehicle.
The City of New Orleans confirmed that 30 people were hospitalised, and officials fear the death toll could rise. The area, typically bustling with tourists, has been cordoned off as police and emergency responders continue their investigation.
