After 60 years, a 4th-century BC funerary monument has returned to its original location in Elliniko, the site of Athens’ former airport.
Removed in the 1960s by archaeologist Vassilios Petrakos to protect it during airport construction, the pi-shaped stone structure was recently reinstated by LAMDA Development, the developers of The Ellinikon Project. Architect/engineer Dimitris Korres oversaw the meticulous three-month relocation process, employing innovative techniques like 3D imaging to ensure the monument’s preservation during transport. The monument, which purportedly gave the area its name during Ottoman rule (as explained in the linked video), will be a key feature of a cultural path within The Ellinikon urban renewal project.
