In a recent interview with SKAI radio, Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Thanasis Kontogeorgis highlighted the Greek government's commitment to addressing critical public health issues, including underage alcohol consumption and smoking regulations.
"We are dealing with an extremely serious social issue," Kontogeorgis stated, referring to planned legislation to ban the sale of alcohol to minors. He emphasised that the government is focused on prioritising the well-being of children and addressing loopholes in existing laws. "This is under preparation and will soon be presented for public consultation in Parliament," he announced. The Deputy Minister also acknowledged the existence of legal "grey areas" that have allowed some to exploit the system, adding that the new measures aim to eliminate these gaps and strengthen the enforcement framework.
When asked about rumors regarding a potential ban on smoking in outdoor areas, Kontogeorgis clarified, "I am not aware of such a thing; I cannot say anything more about it." However, he reiterated the government’s commitment to enforcing the existing indoor smoking ban, underlining its importance for public health and quality of life.
The Deputy Minister also turned his attention to broader issues affecting life in Athens, particularly in comparison with other European capitals. He revealed plans for a revised framework under the Road Traffic Act and improvements to the city’s public transport system. These measures aim to enhance urban mobility and environmental sustainability while encouraging both collective and individual responsibility in fostering a more livable urban environment.
As the government prepares to move forward with these initiatives, Kontogeorgis’s comments underline a renewed focus on public health and urban quality of life as key priorities for Greece.
