Heavy rainfall on the Greek island of Rhodes over the weekend resulted in flooding and disruptions to the road network.
According to data from the meteo.gr station of the National Observatory of Athens, located in the city of Rhodes, 151 millimetres of rain were recorded from Saturday midday until Sunday morning (January 5th).
This amount is almost equal to the average rainfall recorded by the same station for January (153 millimetres), based on data since its establishment in June 2012. It is worth noting that significant rainfall was also recorded at the Lindos station, east of the island (66 millimetres), from the morning of Saturday, January 4th.
The heavy rainfall, particularly during the early morning hours of Sunday, caused problems on the road network of Rhodes city and in villages on the island's east side.
Due to the severity of the weather events, an alert was sent via 112 at 2:00 AM, urging residents to be especially careful and limit their movements: "Due to severe weather phenomena (rainfall) on the island of Rhodes, limit your movements. Follow the instructions of the authorities."
Civil Protection forces were placed on full alert, and there were reports of flooded homes in the Pylona area.
