Despite her loss to Peyton Stearns, Maria Sakkari (No. 32) will still compete in the Adelaide tournament’s main draw as a lucky loser.
Although Sakkari lost, she secured a spot in the main draw of the Adelaide 500 tournament as a lucky loser.
This also avoids a potential “Greek” clash. Had Sakkari defeated her 23-year-old American opponent, she would have faced Paula Badosa (No. 11), the Spanish player and partner of Stefanos Tsitsipas, in the first round.
Instead, Sakkari will now face 20-year-old Czech Linda Noskova (No. 26) in the first round. If she advances, she will face American Jessica Pegula (World No. 7 and the top seed in Adelaide) in the second round.
