Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages during his opening statement at the 10th Greece-Egypt-Cyprus Trilateral Summit, held in Cairo on Wednesday.
Mitsotakis highlighted the key issues on the summit’s agenda, including Egypt's vital role in addressing regional challenges, particularly the situation in Libya. “We appreciate Egypt's efforts in relation to Libya,” he stated, underscoring the importance of regional cooperation in conflict resolution.
However, the Greek leader also took the opportunity to call for international attention to the escalating crisis in Gaza. “Let’s not forget what’s happening in Gaza. We must work for a ceasefire and the release of the hostages so that a way can be found to restore momentum, which should be tied to a two-state solution,” Mitsotakis emphasised.
He further addressed the broader geopolitical landscape, noting, “While there are numerous challenges, the positive aspect is that we are facing each other directly, exchanging views, and recognizing the importance of cooperation with regional players who share our vision for a stable Middle East. This stability is crucial to preventing the spread of regional conflicts to neighbouring countries.”
Earlier in the day, Mitsotakis met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, underscoring the strengthening of ties between Greece and Egypt, particularly in light of their shared interests in regional security.
The summit brought together delegations from Greece, Egypt, and Cyprus, with discussions focused on various geopolitical concerns, including the situation in Gaza, the ongoing conflicts in Libya, and broader Middle Eastern stability.
