The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) Schools are excited to announce the continuation of their successful online Greek language program, “Greek for Late Beginners,” for the upcoming school year. Launched four years ago during the pandemic, the program has proven to be a great success, offering a dynamic and engaging educational experience for children aged 10-18 who have not previously had the chance to learn Greek.

This program provides an opportunity for students to:

  • Improve their communication skills in Greek,
  • Explore the language and culture of Greece,
  • Engage in lessons with the help of modern technology.

Designed for children with Greek heritage who may have missed the opportunity to learn the language due to time constraints, daily obligations, or living in remote areas, the program offers a flexible learning environment that connects students to their cultural roots and strengthens their sense of identity.

Currently, “Greek for Late Beginners” features five online classes with over 30 enrolled students. A team of dedicated and experienced teachers ensures each student receives a high-quality, personalized education.

Program Structure and New Classes

Courses are delivered in cycles of 8-10 two-hour lessons. Students can choose between open classes (up to 10 students) or smaller, closed classes (4 students) for a more tailored experience. The new classes begin in February:

New Class A1.1: Monday, February 3, 4:30–6:30 PM
(No prior knowledge required, focuses on learning the alphabet, greetings, self-introduction, and daily activities.)

Term 1 Classes:

  • A1.3: Tuesday, February 4, 4:30–6:30 PM
  • A1.4: Wednesday, February 5, 4:30–6:30 PM
  • A1.3: Wednesday, February 3, 4:30–6:30 PM
  • A2.2: Wednesday, February 5, 4:30–6:30 PM
  • A2.4: Monday, February 3, 6:30–8:30 PM

Eleni Demetriou, a teacher at GCM Schools and coordinator of the program, expressed her excitement:
“With this program, we give every child the chance to learn Greek from the comfort of their own home, no matter where they are or what their prior knowledge is. We start with the basics and nurture a passion for learning throughout the lessons. All that’s needed is an internet connection, a computer, and the desire to learn. Our experienced teachers handle the rest, and students will see progress right from the start!”
