In a candid outburst, tennis star Nick Kyrgios has criticized Australia's handling of Novak Djokovic, following the Serbian player's claim that he was poisoned while detained in Melbourne. Responding to Djokovic's allegation that he suffered food poisoning during his confinement, Kyrgios remarked, "We treated him like rubbish."

Three years ago, then-immigration minister Alex Hawke denied Djokovic entry into Australia due to his vaccination status. Djokovic was held at Melbourne's Park Hotel for five days while he contested the decision, eventually leading to his deportation.

In a GQ interview ahead of this year's Australian Open, Djokovic alleged that he experienced health issues after consuming food provided to him during his hotel stay. He claimed that the food was tainted, causing high levels of heavy metals in his system, including lead and mercury.

Kyrgios was asked about the matter during a media appearance at Melbourne Park. The 29-year-old admitted he was unaware of Djokovic's specific allegations but expressed regret over the situation. "We treated him like rubbish, that's for sure. We shouldn't have done that," Kyrgios stated.

Djokovic's detention and subsequent deportation occurred shortly before he was set to defend his title at the Australian Open. His visa was canceled by the Australian Government on grounds of "health and good order," and an appeal against the decision was rejected.

The Serbian star further suggested that his deportation stemmed from fears within the Australian Government that he might become a symbol for the anti-vaccination movement.

Kyrgios, who has developed a friendship with Djokovic since losing the Wimbledon men's singles final to him in 2022, shared his thoughts on the ongoing discussions around doping and his battle with injuries. Reflecting on his own experience with testing, he expressed confidence in his team's vigilance regarding substances in his system.

Additionally, Kyrgios addressed concerns about a recent closed practice session at Melbourne Park, clarifying that it was a misunderstanding, and welcomed the presence of fans and cameras during his training.

The Australian player also spoke about his return to the sport after a long absence due to severe wrist and knee injuries. He emphasized the excitement and unpredictability he brings to the court and the importance of diverse personalities in tennis.
