An investigation conducted by Pakistani authorities following the sinking of a fishing vessel carrying about 750 illegal immigrants near Greece on June 14, 2023, revealed that approximately 60 Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials were allegedly involved in human trafficking.
According to the same investigation, 155 of the illegal immigrants who lost their lives had departed from Karachi International Airport as part of this route to Greece via third countries.
International media reports that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against 21 employees, many of whom were officers, inspectors, and employees who collaborated with migrant smugglers, who facilitated the illegal entry into Greece of more than 4,000 people!
A list of names of those involved was made public:
According to Daily Pakistan, the report said over 4,000 Pakistanis were sent to Greece, and many of them lost their lives in three separate boat accidents.
The investigation also led to the presentation of a final report recommending the dismissal of 38 FIA officials, with disciplinary actions already initiated against 21 implicated officers.
The inquiry also raised questions about frequent departures to Libya, a war-torn country, which should have raised red flags among the immigration staff.
It was concluded that supervisory officers' failure to recognise suspicious travel trends contributed to the continuation of these illegal activities.
