Athens' public transportation system is undergoing a major digital transformation with the launch of the "tap-and-ride" payment system. Starting January 15th, passengers will be able to pay for rides on buses, trolleys, the metro, and trams using their bank cards or digital wallets via smartphones and smartwatches.

This advancement builds upon the successful pilot program implemented in April 2024 on the express airport bus lines, where contactless payments now account for 9% of all transactions. The new system will allow passengers to avoid queues at ticket machines and enjoy a simplified travel experience, as the system automatically calculates the most cost-effective fare based on their usage.

"This innovation positions Athens alongside other forward-thinking cities like Madrid, Milan and London in offering modern, convenient transit solutions," said a spokesperson for the Athens Urban Transport Organization. Officials emphasize that the integration of contactless payments contributes to smarter urban mobility and enhanced accessibility for all.

The rollout of the tap-and-ride system marks a significant digital transformation for Athens' public transportation network, providing passengers with a seamless and efficient way to pay for their rides. This transition is expected to improve the overall travel experience and promote the use of sustainable modes of transportation within the capital.
