Thousands Gather for Epiphany Greek Festival in Sydney 2025
Thousands of Sydney's Hellenic community gathered at Carss Bush Park on January 12th to celebrate the annual Epiphany Greek Festival, organised by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. The bright and sunny weather, fitting for the Feast of Lights, drew a large crowd to the coastal park in Carss Park.
The day began at 11 am with a steady stream of attendees arriving at the picturesque coastal park from neighbouring suburbs like Kogarah, South Hurstville, and Blakehurst, all areas with significant Greek-Australian populations. The atmosphere was electric, fueled by anticipation for the day's events and enhanced by the beautiful, sunny weather.
At 1 PM, Archbishop Makarios arrived by boat to preside over the Blessings of the Waters service. During the service, he threw the Cross into the water for swimmers to retrieve. The lucky swimmer who found the Cross was 15-year-old Dennis Petri from Liverpool.
This year marked the second time the Epiphany celebration was held at Carss Park. The religious Feast of the Epiphany was combined with the Greek Summer Festival, previously organised by the Saint Basils organisation. The Archdiocese, the Intercommunity Committee of the Archdiocese, and Saint Basils joined the two events, creating the "Epiphany Greek Festival."
Following the religious ceremony, the official program commenced, with numerous officials in attendance, including Mr Yannis Mallikourtis, Consul General of Greece in Sydney, Steve Kamper, NSW Minister for Multiculturalism, Small Business, Lands and Property, and Sport representing Premier Chris Minns, Sophie Cotsis, NSW Minister for Industrial Relations and Work Health and Safety, Nikolaos Varelas, the Deputy High Commissioner of Cyprus in Australia, Sam Stratikopoulos, Councillor for Georges River Council representing the Mayor.
In his speech, Minister Kamper shared that he and the Premier decided to allocate $50,000 to support the Festival this year. Councillor Stratikopoulos further highlighted that the Georges River Council, including Carss Bush Park, contributed approximately $20,000 as an official event sponsor.
The all-day event featured an array of entertainment, including dance performances by the Hellenic Lyceum, Greek Community, Aristotelian Dance Academy, Sophia Ventouri, Nikita Ellenis, Iho Nyx, Cyprus Community, Sydney Greek Dancing school, Sizmos dance group, and Rallis School of Greek Dance group. Vasilis Metaxas and DJ Georgie D provided music.
