Greece is set to strengthen its defense posture with an Israeli missile deal amidst heightened tensions with Turkey. Inspired by ancient strategies of Themistocles, Greece plans to deploy advanced missile systems in the Aegean Sea to create a modern "wall of missiles." This strategic measure aims to counterbalance Turkey's superior naval power, highlighting Greece's commitment to regional security despite budgetary constraints.
Greece is poised to enhance its defensive capabilities through a missile acquisition deal with Israel, as tensions escalate with neighboring Turkey. The Greek newspaper Ta Nea has revealed plans for the deal, expected to be finalized by this summer, as a countermeasure to the growing Turkish military threat.
Drawing a parallel to the ancient strategies of Themistocles, the renowned Athenian leader known for his decisive preparations against the Persian navy in 524 BC, Greece seeks to create a modern "wall of missiles" in the Aegean Sea. This strategic move mirrors the "wooden walls" Themistocles famously built—an extensive fleet that safeguarded Athens despite being outnumbered by the Persians.
Under this new defense strategy, Greece plans to deploy Israeli NLOS missile batteries, which have a range of up to 32 kilometers, across several Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. Some of these islands are situated just kilometers from the Turkish coast. Additionally, the deployment will include Israeli Puls missile launchers, capable of reaching targets up to 300 kilometers away.
Acknowledging its naval limitations compared to Turkey's expansive and costly fleet, Greece is determined to bolster its defenses with this innovative approach. Budget constraints notwithstanding, Greece's implementation of advanced missile technology highlights its commitment to securing its territorial integrity against potential threats.
A map illustrating the Greek islands that are set to be armed, each within striking distance of Turkey, accompanies the report. The move represents a significant step in regional security efforts, underscoring Greece's resolve in the face of adversity.
