A Hellenistic Byzantine-era monastery featuring a unique mosaic has been discovered in southern Israel, as announced by the Israel Antiquities Authority.

This 1,500-year-old site was found during excavations north of Kiryat Gat, roughly 35 miles south of Tel Aviv. Notably, the site includes a mosaic with an ancient Greek inscription from the Book of Deuteronomy, proclaiming, "Blessed are you when you come in and blessed are you when you go out" (Deuteronomy 28:6).

The monastery's vibrant mosaic floor is adorned with images of crosses, lions, doves, a ceramic jug, flowers, and geometric designs, highlighted by the biblical inscription at its center. Discovered ahead of new neighborhood construction, the excavation uncovered remains of at least 10 buildings, including the monastery, a winepress, and a large warehouse.

"This is the largest and most significant Roman and Byzantine period site uncovered in this area," stated Shira Lifshitz and Maayan Margulis, managers from the Israel Antiquities Authority. The monastery, dating back to the 5th-6th centuries CE, was built over a Roman-period site and remained in use for about 600 years.

Svetlana Talis, director of the Southern Region at the Israel Antiquities Authority, remarked that the find emphasizes the historical significance of Kiryat Gat and its environs. Plans are underway to relocate the mosaic floor to a public open area in the city, making it accessible for visitors.
