The 45-year-old driver involved in the tragic traffic accident that led to the death of 22-year-old Panagiotis in Chania has been temporarily detained after his court appearance.

The driver, who was behind the wheel of a Porsche, faces serious charges, including felony charges related to the fatal crash.

According to reports from zarpanews.gr, the driver’s lawyer, Eftihis Mavrogenis, shared that his client appeared devastated during the proceedings, expressing deep regret and stating that he would have preferred to have been the one who lost his life instead of the young victim.

Following his brief apology, the 45-year-old was escorted out of the courthouse through the back exit, where, after discussions between the prosecutor and the investigating judge, he was placed under temporary detention. Initially, it was expected that he would be transferred to Korydallos prison. However, he submitted a request to remain in Chania, citing his role as a father with a child living in the area. It remains uncertain which facility he will ultimately be taken to.

In a shocking development, it was revealed that the driver had an alcohol concentration of 1.99 grams per litre of blood, a level far exceeding the legal limit. According to Greek law, any blood alcohol concentration over 0.50 grams per litre is considered driving under the influence, and the driver’s blood test results confirmed a dangerously high level of intoxication at the time of the accident.
