Greek Call Center Workers Strike Over Union Busting, Surveillance, and Unfair Working Conditions

Workers at Teleperformance's Greek call centers, who provide customer support for major tech companies like Apple, Google, and Netflix, have gone on strike over accusations of union busting, excessive surveillance, and denial of basic rights, including bathroom breaks. The strike reflects growing concerns over poor working conditions, stagnant wages, and a lack of job security for employees. Despite multiple strikes, Teleperformance has yet to agree to a collective labor contract, and tech giants have not responded to the workers' demands.

Teleperformance employees in Greece, who provide customer service for tech giants like Apple, Google, and Netflix, are on strike.

They accuse their employer of retaliating against union efforts, excessively monitoring them, and even denying them bathroom breaks.

The strike involves around 12,000 workers at Teleperformance's Greek call centres, which cater to over 140 markets worldwide in 43 languages. Many workers demand better working conditions, including permanent contracts, fair wages, job security, and reduced working hours.

The dispute began in early 2024 when workers pushed for a collective labour agreement due to stagnant wages since 2010 and increasing pressure to meet productivity targets. Many employees on short-term contracts say they are subjected to constant surveillance and performance monitoring. Workers have also complained about being denied bathroom breaks, and sick leave or absences are penalized as "counterproductive."

"We are constantly monitored, recorded, and pressured to increase productivity," said Nikos Spyrelis, a worker at Teleperformance and president of the Setep union in Greece. "If you're sick or absent, it's counted against you, and the company may not renew your contract."

Workers outside Greece also face additional burdens, including high housing and utility costs deducted from their salaries. In some cases, migrant workers report facing harassment and bullying, with severe pressure to meet performance targets.

Giorgos Krasadakis, president of the Setep branch in Chania, explained that wages are low, with many workers paying inflated housing costs and utilities, making it even harder for them to make ends meet. "This creates an atmosphere of fear and stress, where workers can be left homeless if fired or if their contracts aren't renewed," Krasadakis said.

Despite numerous strikes and calls for change, Teleperformance has not yet agreed to a collective labour contract.

The union continues to push for a fair contract that addresses workers' concerns. Still, Teleperformance has not responded to multiple requests for comment, nor have companies like Netflix, Apple, or Google, which rely on Teleperformance for customer support.
