A 55-year-old Greek colonel has been arrested by the Electronic Crime Authority (ELAS) for possession of child pornography.

The arrest comes after authorities received a tip from international partners regarding a Greek user uploading child sexual abuse content online.

ELAS Tracks Down the Suspect

ELAS launched an investigation and identified the internet connection used for the uploads. However, a search of the registered address for the connection yielded no relevant evidence. Further investigation revealed that the colonel was also using the same connection, leading ELAS to his residence.

Digital Evidence Found at Colonel's Home

A search of the colonel's home, conducted in the presence of a judicial officer, uncovered a mobile phone, a microSD card, and a laptop computer. Forensic examination of these devices revealed thousands of files containing child sexual abuse material, both photos and videos.

Colonel Arrested and Evidence Sent for Further Examination

The colonel was arrested on the grounds of self-incrimination based on the digital evidence found on his devices. The seized electronic devices will be sent to the Criminal Investigation Directorate for further analysis.

Authorities Encourage Reporting of Cybercrime

ELAS urges Greek citizens to report any suspected illegal or harmful online activity anonymously through various channels:

  • Telephone: 11188
  • Email: ccu@cybercrimeunit.gov.gr
  • Twitter: @CyberAlertGR
  • Government portal (gov.gr): Citizen and Daily Life section / Complaints / Complaints about cybercrimes
  • CYBERKID mobile application

This case highlights the ongoing efforts of Greek law enforcement to combat child sexual abuse material online. International cooperation and digital forensics play a crucial role in identifying and apprehending perpetrators.
