In a statement released shortly after Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced his proposal for Konstantinos Tasoulas as the next President of the Hellenic Republic, outgoing President Katerina Sakellaropoulou reflected on her tenure and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve.
“Five years ago, the Greek Parliament elected me as President, following the proposal of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the New Democracy party,” Sakellaropoulou said in her statement. “I am deeply grateful for the honour and trust they placed in me.”
She emphasized her commitment throughout her presidency, stating, “During my term, I have endeavoured to carry out my duties with the utmost responsibility towards the Greek people and my conscience, while respecting the powers and institutional role that the Constitution affords to the President of the Republic.”
Sakellaropoulou concluded with well wishes for her successor, saying, “I wish every success to the new President, who will be chosen by the Greek Parliament for the next five years.”
Her statement marks a dignified close to her presidency as she prepares for her successor’s election, with the country now turning its attention to the upcoming vote in Parliament.
