The health condition of Archbishop Anastasios of Albania continues to cause deep concern, as efforts by doctors to awaken him from sedation remain unsuccessful.

One week after undergoing surgery to address severe bleeding in the lower digestive tract, the 95-year-old spiritual leader remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Evangelismos Hospital in Athens.

Medical teams are persisting in their efforts, but so far, these have not yielded the desired results. According to medical sources, every hour without improvement is critical, as his condition remains precarious.

Emergency Airlift from Tirana to Athens

The Archbishop's health crisis began in Tirana, where he had been hospitalised since December 30th due to complications from a virus. His condition deteriorated, culminating in gastric bleeding that necessitated his emergency transfer to Athens via airlift. The Archbishop had previously been treated at Evangelismos in 2020 after contracting COVID-19.

A Renowned Spiritual Leader

Archbishop Anastasios has served as the head of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania since 1992. Known for his remarkable spiritual and humanitarian work, he has received widespread recognition for his efforts to promote interfaith dialogue and rebuild the Orthodox Church in Albania after decades of suppression under communist rule.

As his health battle continues, the Orthodox faithful in Albania, Greece, and beyond are united in prayer for his recovery. The coming hours will be decisive in determining whether the Archbishop’s condition improves.
