Metlen Expands Alumina Production to Extract Critical Mineral Gallium Amidst China Export Restrictions

Greek-based energy and metals group Metlen has announced plans to expand its alumina production capabilities to include the extraction of the critical mineral gallium. This comes as China tightens its restrictions on gallium exports, a mineral essential for high-quality semiconductors and smartphones.

Metlen currently processes bauxite from its Greek mines into alumina, which is then refined into aluminum. With a planned investment of 295.5 million euros, the company aims to boost its alumina output from 865,000 tons to 1.27 million tons annually. Gallium production is set to commence in 2027, with an annual target of 50 tons.

This strategic move by Metlen will allow Europe to reduce its reliance on imported gallium. The investment aligns with recent geopolitical developments, as China recently banned the export of gallium, along with germanium and antimony, to the United States due to their military applications. China currently dominates the refined gallium market, accounting for 98.8% of global production last year, according to consultancy Project Blue.
