Nick Kyrgios Outlines His 2025 Plans, Hints at Future in Doubles

Nick Kyrgios has suggested 2025 could be his final year in singles competition as he contemplates a future in doubles. After his Grand Slam return at the Australian Open, Kyrgios hinted at stepping back from singles due to ongoing physical demands, while expressing confidence in his doubles potential alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis. As he weighs his options, Kyrgios aims to conclude his singles career with a few more wins, potentially making a splash at Wimbledon later this year.

Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis returned to the Australian Open doubles event for the first time since clinching the title in 2022. Marking his comeback after an 18-month injury hiatus, Kyrgios participated in the Grand Slam at Melbourne earlier this week.

Unfortunately, he faced an early exit, losing to Jacob Fearnley in the first round amid ongoing injury struggles.

In a post-match revelation, Kyrgios hinted that this might have been his last singles appearance at the Australian Open. Despite this setback, he remained in the doubles competition with Kokkinakis, although their campaign ended prematurely when Kokkinakis had to retire due to injury in the second set.

Following the conclusion of his Australian Open journey, the 29-year-old Kyrgios shared his plans for the remainder of the year, expressing uncertainty about his future in singles.

Reflecting on his condition and performance, Kyrgios stated during a press conference, "I’ve been out for quite a while, so this year is somewhat unpredictable for me. I feel I'm striking the ball well, but I’m still working my way back to my 2022 form."

When discussing his singles career, Kyrgios expressed doubts about continuing beyond 2025. He elaborated on the physical toll the sport takes, mentioning the extensive time spent on treatment with no assurance of being fit to compete.

Despite these uncertainties, Kyrgios indicated he might focus on doubles, mentioning, "When we’re at full health, we can be formidable in doubles. It's less demanding on the body, and we have a natural synergy in our game."

The duo previously stunned the tennis world by winning the Australian Open doubles title in 2022.

While Kyrgios last secured an ATP singles victory 833 days ago at the Japan Open, he remains hopeful about his singles future. He plans to attempt another win before potentially retiring from singles play. Recent close encounters, like the tight match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard at the Brisbane International, show glimpses of his former prowess.

Kyrgios' calendar for 2025 remains unclear. However, the Australian mentioned his intention to "make some noise" at Wimbledon, recalling his past success when he reached the finals against Novak Djokovic.

Only time will unveil whether Kyrgios will return to singles competition, as he aims to end his singles career with a few more victories.
