A trial date is expected to be set soon.
In footage aired by MEGA on Saturday morning (January 18), a police transport van can be seen picking up the 45-year-old from the ferry, where he had been kept in a special holding area throughout the journey. He is now being transferred to Korydallos Prison, where he will be held in a special wing until his trial date is determined.
The driver involved in the fatal accident had consumed an excessive amount of alcohol, seven times above the legal limit. Following the results of his blood and toxicology tests, he has also been charged with driving under the influence of antipsychotic medications.
Specifically, the driver tested positive for alcohol approximately four hours before causing the deadly crash. He was fined administratively, and the police allowed him to leave, handing the car keys to the passenger, who tested negative for alcohol. However, it seems the driver later took the keys back, proceeded on a reckless path, and ended the life of the 22-year-old.
As a result, the three police officers involved were immediately suspended, and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis decided to dismiss the entire Chania Police Directorate.
