Turkey is taking dynamic steps in the development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), investing in new technological projects such as the Bayraktar Kalkan. The Bayraktar Kalkan is reported to include vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities.
This move by Turkey comes in response to the global trend for more flexible and multifunctional drones that can operate in areas without extensive take-off/landing infrastructure.
Greece, on the other hand, has launched the "Archytas" program to develop a domestic drone that will serve military and civilian purposes. "Archytas" aims to strengthen the country's defense and operational autonomy.
Turkey, with Baykar's experience in drone manufacturing, is trying to beat Greece and other countries developing similar VTOL technologies. At the same time, Greece, with the support of the EU and international collaborations, is seeking to reduce its dependence on defense technology exporters.
The development of VTOL drones could be a crucial point for future military operations, as such drones offer increased flexibility and capabilities for reconnaissance, surveillance, and attack. If Turkey manages to introduce the Bayraktar Kalkan soon, it will gain an additional advantage in the region. On the other hand, "Archytas" represents Greece's determination to develop in the same sector, providing new capabilities for national defense.
