The recent developments regarding the baby trafficking ring in Chania have shocked the community, revealing a complex and illegal operation involving medical professionals.
Two gynecologists, one a well-known obstetrician-gynecologist and professor from Heraklion, and the other a doctor from Chania affiliated with a fertility clinic, have been arrested. These arrests are part of a larger investigation into illegal adoptions and trafficking, which surfaced in mid-2024.
The raid in late August last year, which followed claims of illegal activities, led to the detention of nine newborns, including several Australian babies, in a high-security neonatal ward at Chania Hospital. In response to the situation, the Greek government secured the babies while an investigation was underway. Using DNA testing, authorities were able to confirm the babies' biological parents and the newborns were subsequently returned to their rightful families.
The latest investigation has exposed a range of illegal activities, including fake medical procedures, the illegal trade of genetic material (eggs and sperm), and violations of donation laws. Over 500 fake medical procedures were conducted, deceiving women about embryo transfers and the preservation of genetic material. In addition, 173 egg donors were involved, with only a fraction officially registered, and in some instances, genetic material was distributed to multiple couples. The operation has generated millions of euros in illicit profits, with the estimated earnings ranging from €1.6 million to €8.5 million.
As of January 20, four more people were arrested, bringing the total number of accused individuals to 18, including two key members in custody since September 2024. Investigations are ongoing, focusing on additional evidence and possible involvement of other individuals in operation, including the fertility centre at the heart of the criminal activities.
