The case, which has drawn significant attention, highlights concerns about accountability within international organisations.
The investigation began following a report filed by UN oversight bodies with the European Public Prosecutor's Office. However, because the funds in question were not of European origin, the case was referred to the Greek Prosecutor's Office of First Instance.
Greek judicial authorities have since charged the UN employee with felony offences, including fraud and forgery. She is expected to provide testimony before an examining magistrate in the coming weeks.
According to sources familiar with the case, the accused held a senior role within the UN, managing substantial financial resources. It is alleged that she submitted falsified expense reports supported by fraudulent documents, enabling her to misappropriate over $1 million between 2014 and 2021.
Authorities have emphasised their commitment to ensuring justice is served in this case. Further updates are expected as the legal proceedings unfold.
