Significant 5.3 quake hits near Mitilini, Lesbos, North Aegean, Greece

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck near Mitilini, on the island of Lesbos in the North Aegean, Greece, late on Tuesday, January 21st, 2025, at 10:38 pm local time. The tremor, which occurred at a shallow depth of just 3.80 kilometres, was reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), one of the leading global agencies monitoring seismic activity.

The earthquake’s epicentre was near the town of Mitilini. While initial reports from the EMSC indicated a magnitude of 5.3, a secondary report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) registered a slightly higher magnitude of 5.8.

As is typical with seismic events, the reported magnitude, epicentre, and depth may undergo revision as seismologists analyze and refine further data or as other monitoring agencies issue additional reports.
