A 39-year-old Turkish man has been arrested and confessed to the murder of an OPAP store owner in Palaio Faliro on Sunday night. The suspect, who has been in Greece for three years under asylum status, was captured in central Athens with €7,000 in cash.
Authorities report that the man admitted to the killing but claimed it was an act of self-defence. According to his account, when he entered the store to play, the owner told him it was closed and asked him to leave. The suspect claimed that the owner then attacked him with a bat and a knife, prompting him to act in self-defence.
The 61-Year-Old Was Stabbed Thirty Times by the Perpetrator
The 39-year-old, who is in Greece under asylum-seeker status and has no prior criminal record, was taken to the Athens Police Headquarters. During his interrogation, he admitted to killing the 61-year-old and leaving him dead in the store’s restroom. However, he claimed he had not entered the agency intending to rob it but as a customer.
However, investigators believe the suspect had intended to rob the OPAP store. After the incident, the suspect discarded the knife on a nearby beach. The victim was discovered fatally injured by a woman who entered the store to play, finding the premises in disarray.
