Two gynecologists involved in a high-profile illegal baby adoption ring in Chania have been released under restrictive conditions following their testimonies.
The case has drawn significant public attention in Greece, highlighting allegations of human trafficking, illegal surrogacy, and violations of egg donation regulations.
Lengthy Testimonies and Restrictions
The two accused, a professor at the University of Crete and a 46-year-old gynecologist from Chania, testified for more than 17 hours. After their pleas, restrictive measures were imposed, including a travel ban and bail conditions. The gynecologist from Chania was required to pay €100,000, while the university professor was granted release on €50,000 bail.
Both defendants face serious felony charges, including membership in a criminal organisation. According to state broadcaster ERT, they are accused of participating in illegal human trafficking operations, as well as orchestrating fraudulent surrogacy and baby adoptions.
A Network of Exploitation
The illegal activities came to light in the summer of 2023, following an extensive police investigation spurred by complaints from victims. Authorities revealed that the ring had been active since at least 2018, exploiting women through a network of fake surrogates and unauthorised genetic material trafficking.
In total, the group is believed to have defrauded 274 women in 529 documented cases. Among the offenses were 75 cases involving 11 identified victims of human trafficking. Investigators also discovered instances where the same genetic material—eggs and sperm—was used to create embryos for multiple couples without the knowledge of the donors or recipients.
Egg Donation Violations
One of the most shocking aspects of the case was the illegal handling of egg donations. The investigation uncovered handwritten records of 173 egg donors who underwent 333 egg retrieval procedures, resulting in their eggs being distributed to 1,226 different recipients. Many of these donors were not listed in Greece's National Donor Registry, raising further concerns about oversight and safety.
Public Outcry and Legal Implications
The revelations have sparked outrage across Greece, with calls for stricter regulations in fertility treatments and surrogacy practices. The case also sheds light on the broader issue of human trafficking in the country, emphasizing the need for stronger enforcement of existing laws.
As the investigation continues, the released gynecologists remain under close scrutiny, with their next court appearances eagerly anticipated by the public.
