Tennis Australia Reiterates Stance Against Players Competing in Russia After Kokkinakis Exhibition

Tennis Australia has reaffirmed its adherence to the Australian government’s recommendations against participating in tournaments held in Russia, following Thanasi Kokkinakis’s appearance in a St. Petersburg exhibition.

The exhibition, reportedly sponsored by sanctioned Russian oil giant Gazprom, drew criticism and prompted Tennis Australia to clarify its position.

The organization stated, “Tennis Australia has consistently abided by federal government policy and recommendations regarding Russia. This support and compliance continues. We advise athletes against competing in Russia and are in ongoing discussions with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to educate players about the potential ramifications of conducting business in this area.”

Kokkinakis’s participation in the exhibition comes after criticism from Australian tennis legend Todd Woodbridge regarding Kokkinakis’s offseason decisions and a subsequent injury. Kokkinakis defended his choice to play exhibitions, citing financial motivations. He has not, however, directly addressed his participation in the Russian event.
